Dear GGn members,
We’re extremely happy to be here and able to welcome you back to your favorite games tracker! No doubt you have some burning questions on how this can be possible and the events leading up to our return; so let’s start:
Why’d you close, only to come back?
Two months ago we were in a position where we could not guarantee the ongoing safety of the staffers or members of the site. Rather than risk making that data accessible to some legal organization, we decided to shut down and fully give the impression we would never be returning (ha!). We’ve spent our downtime moving servers around and buffing up our security, as well as fixing lots of bugs and usability issues. The site and all your great work in terms of game descriptions and user contributions are 100% intact.
Really? All our stats?
All accounts are active again. You’ll of course not be subject to any hit n runs or inactivity disables that would have otherwise come into effect for not logging in/seeding whilst the tracker was offline. No torrents have been deleted for inactivity. Now what is important is we get back to seeding the existing torrents so all your hard work in the past doesn’t go to waste. To accommodate for the fact some users will have removed content, torrent inactivity deletions is disabled for the next month. There have been plenty of game releases in the last month that we need to catch up on, so there’re plenty of upload bytes opportunities – get uploading!
What about my stats? And didn’t you say you wiped the data?
All your stats, including torrents, seeding, forums, achievements, etc. have been fully restored. The plan was to wipe the data shortly after taking the site down, but the sysops immediately began talking about re-opening and decided to hold on to it for a little while should that happen. Rest assured, the data was handled with the respect your privacy deserves, fully encrypted and stored offline until a trustworthy host was established.
I’ve deleted files and now have/will get HnRs?
None of your current downloads will be processed as hit-n-runs for the next month. Re-download anything that will be classed as a hit-n-run due to lack of seedtime and resolve this before the month-long grace period expires. Anything you download from here on out though is subject to the rules.
Anything else change?
While we were down, we took the time to make a few fixes/improvements to the site. Most were around security, but some other back-end changes were also made to improve the site experience. If you look at the staff page you’ll notice that it more clearly shows which staffers cover which responsibilities, and who is in charge of each aspect of the site.

As you all know, the side has been down a time now. Because of the old owner who could not run side anymore. Some of the new staff made contact with the old owner of mp3scene. After that, he offered whole page and the database.Site is still very fresh, new and beta. It may take some time to have everything fully functional again, but some users should be able to possibly recover there old account if they are in database backup.

For those of you who can't read french, well you probably won't care anyway loll but it says that they will be closing down somewhere around the end of may, they won't give any specific reason as to why, but it says that the sysop is dealing with real bad real life issues, and has to stop, it is for personal reasons.

ShareTheRemote Shutdown Soon

It's with great sadness that I write this post, however it's time to officially announce what many have been speculating about for quite some time: SharetheRemote has run its course and will be shutting down around the 16th of January.

While the immediate reason for this shutdown is a lack of funds (Note: Any donations made at this point will not be received until the 15th of February and will not help cover January's server bill), the prevailing reason is the stagnation that the site has faced. Both the torrent and user counts have floated around their current values and new features have came to a grinding halt ever since RC2 was prematurely released. The blame for this goes exclusively to the higher echelons of staff (developers+) - While the talent was certainly there, the activity simply was not. While it's a shame to see a site die due to a lack of organization, it's a harsh reality that we must face.

So what's to become of the torrents, users, and code? That's up to you guys. We currently aren't ruling out the idea of a merger, takeover by a new administration, or user relocation offer. If you are capable and willing to offer any of these services, send *** a PM. For now, the site will be set to global freeleech until it goes down. Grab as much content as possible and make sure to share it with the world!

YES!

..:: What does this mean? ::..

Simply? AO is no longer based on the 1:1 Ratio System you have all come to live with. We are now basing our site simply on seed times.

..:: BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RULES? ::..

The new rules are simple. We have a thing called a Hit & Run system. This means that if you download a torrent, and don't seed for 72 hours out of 168 hours (3 days out 7) that you will get a warning. AO will give you the opportunity to reseed it again after that. If you have more then 3 infractions a month, you're account will get disabled.

..:: What happens about promotions? ::..

Well, this is the easy part. We're increasing the amount of upload you need for promotion, but removing anything to do with ratio requirements. So, instead of needing a 1.05 Ratio to be promoted, you'll just need to have a certain upload requirement and time on site. It's all pretty easy now.

..:: Is this forever?::..

We're trying something new to help the general user base out. We are trying to make a really nice, and easy site for everyone to use. If this doesn't work out, we have other ideas to try too. But for now, we'll just say it is under a 3 month trial. If everyone plays nice and we get a good flow going, then yeah, we'll keep this system up and running.

..:: When will this system be up and running? ::..

That's the funny part, you've all actually been using it for the last month! Yes, freeleech was just a hidden way of testing the system out. It all has been working very well until now actually. So, we've implemented it. As you'll notice your Download counter is now gone. Same with the Ratio Requirements. Clever right?

..:: Final Notes ::..

We've been trying to get this site feeling right and looking right. We've hit over 6000 active users and 7000 registrations. We're very happy with the way the site has taken off. As of the 1st Jan the site will be on an invite only basis. Plus, there will be a lot of new changes coming! So, just keep your eyes on the AO Announcement Forum and we'll be explaining the rest as they come!
